Fact sheet for HELCOM MPA 392 - The open sea area southeast from Hanko

The area is located in the open sea outside the towns of Hanko and Raasepori.
With regard to the seafloor topography and habitat types, the area is similar to
the outermost parts of Natura 2000 site of the archipelago of Tammisaari and Hanko
as well as the Pohjanpitäjänlahti Bay.

The site encompasses a remarkable number of reefs covered by the Natura
2000 network. Hard bottoms (rock, sand, gravel, rocky ground) are estimated to cover
approximately 40 percent of the total area of the site.
The mean depth of the area is around 35 meters. Reef coverage of the area is estimated
to be at least 1200 ha.

On soft bottoms between the reefs, the most common species of benthic fauna
are Baltic clam (Macoma baltica), blue mussel (Mytilus trossulus),
isopod crustacean (Saduria entomon) and polychaete (Marenzelleria viridis).
