Fact sheet for HELCOM MPA 152 - Kokkola Archipelago

Kokkola area is a large archipelago where the MPA stretches from coastal estuaries and lagoons and glo-lakes to inner and outer archipelago, small islets and skerries, as well as both tree covered and treeless islands, which are inhabited by various species of sea birds. Kokkola archipelago is one of the most important breeding areas of the arctic tern in Finland. Coastal habitats have a high biodiversity. Islands form long peninsulas and deep bays, and the underwater nature represents a transitional zone between marine and fresh water species. Red algae are found occasionally, but blue mussels and barnacles only now and then. Kokkola archipelago is a busy recreational area with many summer cottages along with recreational fishing and boating. A wide navigational channel runs through the area to a busy large port in Ykspihlaja. Oil and chemical transportation forms a potential risk to the area. Recreational boating disturbs the breeding birds during the midsummer.
