Fact sheet for HELCOM MPA 148 - Kirkkosalmi

Kirkkosalmi is an old sea bay, which has been formed by land upheaval. Channeling in the 1960s has prevented the bay from becoming an inland glo-lake. At the same time, the channeling has accelerated the overgrowth by reeds and other emergent vegetation at the expense of submerged vegetation. The Kirkkosalmi area is internationally and nationally important for many species of migrating and breeding birds. There are various threatened underwater macrophytes in the Kirkkosalmi area. Almost one third of the area consists of sand banks, where the sand shifts constantly and which does not support much vegetation. However, the shoreline and the inner bay have more stable conditions for underwater macrophyte growth. The area is unique in a way that there are both marine species and inland freshwater species although the area is still brackish water.
