Fact sheet for HELCOM MPA 147 - Hailuoto northshore

Hailuoto Northshore is a two part conservation area at an end of a ridge section. The northern shore is mostly sandy shallow beach with emergent and submerged vegetation and terrestrial habitats, while the eastern part has more rocky bottoms and submerged vegetation. Between sand dunes and sea cliffs are long, narrow paludifications which typically dry out seasonally. There are also dozens of small ponds and puddles, which have been formed during the land upheaval of the area. These, and the eutrophic coastal wetlands, are a migratory resting place to many threatened species of birds. Successional series of coastal lagoons (flads) and inland glo-lakes are internationally unique. Area represents the most impressive land upheaval successional series of these nature types and lagoons in the world. Many of the traditional coastal meadows and dry heaths have been grazed or the hay has been cut for decades. Now they form unique traditional rural landscapes that have national value.
